2023 SCHOLARSHIPS

HCSC Financial Need Scholarships: The purpose of the High Cascade Financial Need Scholarship program is to assist a small selection of snowboard lovers in financial need with the opportunity of a lifetime.  Scholarships are offered to a select number of financially need based applicants. There are hundreds of snowboarders applying for a scholarship to HCSC.  What makes you stand out from the rest of the applicants?  Be sure to tell us in a letter explaining why you feel you deserve one of these coveted scholarships.

Drake Aron Edwards Memorial Scholarship: The Drake Aron Edwards Memorial Scholarship was created to remember and encourage the spirit of counselor Drake Edwards who so embodied High Cascade’s mission of Life Improvement through Snowboarding. This scholarship will be awarded to the applicant who best demonstrates their efforts to improving lives of others and is available to first time campers, only.  To learn more about Drake, click here to see a great “Day in the Life of Drake Edwards” video made for his freshman year of college at Seattle Pacific University.

“Some people express themselves through art, others dance, or even stamp collecting, but I do it through Snowboarding. The creative process that occurs when you’re using a piece of wood and some frozen water is second to none in my mind. It’s a huge part of who I am. Enjoy!” – Drake Edwards

Joey Niepokoj “ JNEP” Memorial Scholarship

Joey was an incredible snowboarder and friend who grew up in the rail scene of the midwest. His family has decided to sponsor this scholarship towards a first time High Cascade Camper. Joey was unfortunately not able to attend Camp as a kid, so his parents have created this scholarship in his memory for a snowboarder who is as passionate about snowboarding as Joey was. To learn a little more about Joey, enjoy this excerpt written by his Parents:

“Snowboarding was to Joey what water is to life.  His cousin Brian told me that snow isn't actually white: it's actually clear. Snowflakes are made out of ice crystals, so when the light passes through, It bends and bounces off each individual crystal. The entire spectrum of light is reflected back to our eyes, and we see white! Although he grew up in the Midwest with unpredictable winters, it was clear as water to Joe from early on that his passion was riding the slopes. Joe's energy was fueled by that passion and soon he, too, like light through ice crystals, was bending and bouncing off terrain park features, providing a magnificent spectrum of delight to our, his parents, eyes. Any amount or quality of snow was all that was necessary for Joe to be out in it. Temperature never mattered - -40 degrees, blizzard, ice, +40 degrees with sunshine or slush, or every condition in between, his passion prevailed. After Joey passed on from our world, his Aunt Julie spoke of the ancient Greek custom of asking if the departed person had "passion" - it is clear that Joey's passion was snowboarding. (Ask anyone who knew him!)We hope and desire for our dear Joey's undying passion live on through this scholarship to another avid snowboarder who is as passionate and joyful about the sport as he was. Whenever you see an orange butterfly or hear an owl hooting, remember: #JNEPnationLives”
