For the last few years there have been annual copies of DVD-Rs floating around the snowboard industry featuring a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes life of filming a snowboard video part. The DVDs had ‘Bundy Vision’ written on them in Sharpie and featured alternate angles and lifestyle shots of your favorite up-and-coming snowboarders and made you want to go out to get on your board. The extremely exclusive (read: not online) series was filmed and edited by Ted Borland, HCSC digger and Salt Lake City resident. We checked in with Ted during his trip to Tenjin, Japan for the Holy Bowly to see what he thought about snowboarding while going to college, filming both in front of and behind the camera, and the progression of the Bundy Vision series.

What is your name and what do you do at camp during the summer?

Ted Borland, and I’ve been a digger for the past four years.

When you’re not in Government Camp for the summer you live in Salt Lake City, Utah. Where did you grow up? When and why did you end up relocating to Salt Lake?

Salt Lake has been the main homebase for me since 2005, but I was born in Lehighton, Pennsylvania and then moved when I was a kid to Northfield, MA. My parents still live there.

Pressin’ it out for Spedelli’s.
What type of advice would you give to a high-school snowboarder who wants to be able to both go to college and be able to ride as much as possible during the winter?

Find a college somewhere where you can do both. Its not hard to mix the two, just try not to skip too much class to go snowboarding. I’ve mainly gone to college just during fall semesters because of traveling during the main part of the season. If you do go during the winter, just schedule your classes to give you as much time as you need to go boardin’.

Your ongoing Bundy Vision series was started as a school project at SLCC (Salt Lake Community College), right? What are some of the things that you learned at school that you don’t think you would have learned outside of the classroom?

It actually started when I was in High School. I had a program in high school that allowed me to pretty much take the winter term off for an internship. I would go to Mount Snow every day to coach kids and teach a few lessons here and there. But one of the other parts of the internship was for a video credit as well, so I think I just handed in the first Bundy Vision. That one wasn’t specifically made for school, but I did do that again at SLCC for Bundy Vision 3.

I can’t say that I learned much from school that I put towards the original Bundy Vision videos. I learned how to edit long before taking classes and I made most of the videos really ghetto-style. I did learn a lot about general film production in those classes. I learned a lot about using different cameras, editing with different programs, different effects, etc, etc. I’ve slowly incorporated a couple bits and pieces of film school knowledge in there.

What type of real-world filming/editing knowledge do you think you’ve learned that wouldn’t have been taught at school?

I think it’s all about just going out there and figuring it out on your own. You can definitely learn the basics at school, but either way you can learn a lot just by doing it as much as possible. You kinda see what works and what doesnt, what to try next time, what to improve on, all that. They definitely don’t teach you how to use a fisheye properly at school, or how to followcam. And editing snowboarding is completely different from what they teach you to edit in the classroom.

Give me a quick rundown of what your original goal/focus was with Bundy Vision.

Alright, so basically we were just filming snowboarding every day. We had some friends with real cameras, and I always had some crappy little handycam. I think [Chris] Grenier had a camera as well. And then there were Scott [Stevens] and [Chris] Beresford, who were also always filming. So there was a ton of footage between our group of friends. All of the good stuff was going to these two videos, Mouse Productions and EPI films. And I basically took the scraps and whatever I filmed with my camera. I wanted to show everything, not just the A-grades. There were so many magical moments that I knew would get lost forever. Those moments, to me, were the best. Just little things like a funny lifey cruising through the resort, or footage from behind the scenes of contests. Whether or not it would be considered a “shot” didn’t really matter, I just thought it would be sick to show people the stuff that got me and my friends hyped.

Ted is so tall, he makes this 100ft. ledge look normal. Photo: Tim Zimmerman

Do you think you’ve changed anything since when you started? If so, what types of changes did you make and why did you make them?

I think for the most part they’ve all been pretty similar. I’ve never really specifically filmed for Bundy Vision. They kind of all just happen. Maybe Bundy Vision 3 was a little different, because I owned a DVX for that video. So maybe we filmed for that one a little more.

Up until this winter Bundy Vision was only available on DVDs burned and distributed by you personally. I remember you saying that BundyVision 5 would never be on the internet; can you explain why you decided to keep it exclusive to just your circle of friends?

That’s a tough one to answer, because I always debated putting them online. Like I kinda said earlier, each video was more or less a compilation of awesome times throughout the winters. It’s not like we were filming a video to show as many people as possible. I wasn’t really looking for that kind of reward where you see how many views you get at the end of the week. I felt like that would kind of ruin my creations, haha. I dunno, I just thought it would be way more meaningful to anyone that got their hands on a DVD. I thought it would be cool for my friends to have that “rare collector’s item” in their dvd collection.

A tribute to Method Man. Photo: Tim Zimmerman

This winter you switched your program up and started releasing more frequent Bundy Vision edits on lunchramp.com. Are you still planning on taking all the footage you collect this winter and putting together a feature length videoagain or are you making a full transition to more frequent web series?

I’d like to keep doing both. I was getting really bored of snowboard edits, and I missed making them. So its definitely been pretty fun trying to film and edit a little more this year. They’ve mainly been the behind the scenes style edits this year, but I have a lot of A grade stuff too. A lot of tricks that I filmed that are video part quality. But usually I was filming for the 3rd or 4th angle, so there will probably be a lot of leftover hams after all the videos come out. So, I’ll probably make a full length again. Maybe it’ll be DVD only too, who knows haha. “Bundy Vision Infinity”.

Switch Nose Press. Photo: Tim Zimmerman

TJ Schneider was one of the first pros to transition over to web-only content with The Snowboard Realms, Transworld featured Nick Visconti’s ReCreation and Jess Kimura’s Barely, and you’ve got Hana Beaman running the P.S. series featuring female riders from all over the world. How do you feel about the industry opening up to the web series concept and allowing riders to work on more frequent, more personal and less “hammer focused” videos?

It’s good and bad. I could honestly go on about this topic for a really long time. But I’ll say that I think the blend between web content and hard-copy content is good, but its gonna need some work. The internet shouldn’t get all of the coverage. The internet is still a new concept, but clearly not going anywhere. I would love to see hard copies (DVDs, magazines, etc) continue on forever. I hate to see some things go straight to the web, but slowly we’ll be able to see higher quality stuff in both mediums.

It’s always media hour when Ted is riding. Photo: Tim Zimmerman

What are some of your favorite web series, snowboard or other? Are there any old series that you wished were still around?

Well there’s so many out there right now, but I do have some favorites. Change That Tape edits are always amazing. Anytime Burtner puts out a Think Thank edit, its incredible. Yawgoons, Makefriendsordie, and any DWD edit. Also Pat Fenelon has been doing really amazing work for the past two years, and he seems to stay really on top of new camera technology, which is really cool to me.

As far as the old web videos, theres a lot that comes to mind. I was such an internet snowboard nerd, pretty much before snowboarding knew there was an internet. Scott Stevens’ edits (pre-CTT) remain on the favorites list. CrapNeto edits changed my life probably. Old [Bear Mountain] Sundays in the Park, and the list goes on.

Ted is pretty big in Japan.
This is your third year filming with Think Thank for their upcoming 10 year anniversary video ‘Think Thank is Brain Dead and Having a Heart Attack.’ What is it about working with Jesse Burtner and the rest of the Think Thank roster that has you returning year after year to film with them again?

It’s just the best. Seriously. It’s snowboarding and filming in the most complicated forms, but put into the simplest formula. You just go out there with really good friends, hang out and joke around all day, and film it. You kinda build off of little ideas and let them evolve with everyone’s collective ideas. And Burtner definitely helps a lot. Going on trips with him is insane; its such a crazy work ethic, but you have the best time ever. We just try and make it so that we go to spots where everyone is going to get a shot, no matter what. It’s pretty awesome.

One of the best reasons to live in Salt Lake is the early season snow that accumulates up in the hills after Halloween. You’re a founding member of the current iteration of the Bone Zone and have been featured heavily in all of the videos and photos coming out of that area for the last few years. How did the current version of the Bone Zone come together?

I think this is our fourth zone? Alex Andrews was definitely the original bone zone founder. He had a rail and some tubes that he brought up there. We all kinda met and just starting going up there each fall. For a couple years, we kept moving zones. It was either getting too crowded, or we were just getting bored of what we had. We definitely wanted more. So eventually we just found this amazing part of the woods that’s a little further away, and we started fresh up there. It’s been there for three years now, and keeps growing like crazy every fall. We have a solid crew of friends that go up there every day. A really diverse crew, too. It’s not too often you get to watch sessions with people like Deadlung, Scott Stevens, Brandon Hammid, and Jesse Burtner all at the top of the drop in together. It’s seriously the most fun place up to snowboard and I consider it one of my favorite times of the season. Ultimate hype season.

Some of the men behind the Bone Zone.

Do you have any plans or changes you want to make for next year? Can we expect another full-length video to come out of the woods again next year? Also, please provide specific GPS coordinates of the actual location.

There’s a lot of plans, for sure. I cant give anything away right now. Bone Zone definitely survived the 2012 apocalypse, and there’s still plenty more.

You’ve worked at Spedelli’s in Salt Lake for some time, your website lunchramp.com has a logo of a pizza slice and you’ve gone as far as to create a Cobra Dogs pizza crossover. Why have you dedicated so much of your off-board time to pizza? Also if you were standing on the line in the kitchen of Spedelli’s making a personal pie what goes on it?

Pizza is just kind of a way of life, haha. It’s the ultimate comfort food, and that goes hand in hand with the snowboard lifestyle. Also, its cheap, its always good (even if its bad), and everyone loves it.

My Spedellis pizza changes pretty frequently since I work there probably 4 days a week. I have to keep changing it up. But I created one of my favorites and it made it onto the menu as my pro model pizza, the Pizza Vision. Pesto/pizza sauce combo, chicken, tomatoes, onions, green peps, banana peps, sometimes bacon, and artichoke hearts.

You’re a bit of a trend-setter up on-hill during the summer. Two years ago you had almost the entire dig squad wearing Hawaiian shirts and shorts on every LDoH. This past year you declaredCasual Fridays officially over and took it Back to Business, showing up on LDoH wearing slacks and a tie with a coffee mug in one hand and briefcase in theother. Is there anything in store for this summer?

Let’s just say that the diggers know how to keep it fresh all summer. With that much time on hill, you gotta find new ways to keep yourself entertained. Year after year you gotta switch it up, so I’m sure that there will be something new to keep the stoke going this summer.

~*~SHOUTOUT ZONE~*~

There’s way too many people that should be on this list, but I’ll keep it short for now, y’all know who you are! Shout out to all the Diggers, the Lunch Ramp Gang, Ween Fam, Spedellis Crew, Think Thank, Lib Tech, the Dang Gang, and the whole HCSC family. Hyped to see everyone again this summer up at Hood!

We pour our hearts into making sure our 100% Snowboarding™ playgrounds are the best parks on Earth to ride a snowboard. With more than 18 Diggers maintaining our parks and pipes daily, it’s no wonder why our parks end up looking and riding the way they do session after session. And with a bunch of new features added to the park for summer 2013, we’re going to make a promise to you that our parks will be the best they have ever been.

Why do we do this?

Because our staff and family of 130 snowboarders wouldn’t have it any other way. Every single aspect of our 2 private parks and pipes are built entirely for snowboarders; from the shapes of our jumps, to the way we set-up our rails, HCSC is built for YOU. See for yourself, the parks are guaranteed to blow your mind.

What makes a mind blowing park?

It takes a very precise combination of jumps, rails, pipes, rope tows, and awesome to make a mind blowing park. Fortunately for HCSC, we’ve mastered the mix and have a park for every ability and riding style.

Here is a short list of some of the features in our two private snowboard parks:

22′ Super Pipe

Mini Pipe

Quarter Pipe

Big Jumps

Medium Jumps

Small Jumps

Air Bag Jump

Hips

Banked Slalom Course

20 Boxes

30 Rails

Wall Rides

Pole Jams

And the list goes on and on.

I’ve wanted to do this interview for a really long time because people need to know about more people like Colton Morgan. I’ve never met anybody else quite like him, putting it into words will barely do it justice. He’s one of the most interesting people that I’ve ever met and the same can be said about his snowboarding. He beams with childlike excitement and creativity that is impossible to ignore when you’re around him. He cares about his friends and family to infinity and beyond, loves frozen yogurt and his mustache has had multiple birthdays. Colton has spent a lot of time in the Tahoe area spreading good cheer with folks from the bHappy crew and nowadays is filming with Working For The City while doing most of the work behind the camera for Under Dawgs. His talent comes through in his pursuits and he’s motivated to really make his mark in snowboarding to show people that fun and friendship are truly what we should be doing this for.

-Toby Witte

Who are you, where are you from and what do you do at High Cascade?

My name is Colton Wilkie Morgan and I’m from New Jersey. I’ve lived in Tahoe City since I was 15, now I’m 20. I’m a counselor.

Were you the typical kid that rode in jeans and wore a bunch of Grenade stuff?

I was the kid that would get out of school, and my mom would drive me to Mountain Creek to go night riding. I was pretty scared of all the kids there ‘cause they would shoot off fireworks and do all this crazy stuff. I just liked to ride at night.

Your boy letting ‘em know. Photo: Greg Furey

How long after your family moved to Tahoe did you link up with bHappy?

Really short after! My mom took me to an Academy Snowboards Camp in spring. At first I didn’t want to go but I went and I was in a group with these kids and it was kind of all the bHappy kids. At first I wasn’t really down for them and kept to myself but as time went on I started liking them all. By the next year we were all really good friends. I saw JB from Academy the other day and we kind of talked about how he brought all of us kids together. Thanks, Academy!

Style: Colton Morgan Photo: Greg Furey

That sort of turned into Under Dawgs. We’ve heard from Jesse Gouveia and Andrew Aldridge but could you tell us about it from the filmers perspective?

Under Dawgs was going to be a skate video and hopefully still will be, but I didn’t have a project to work with this year. I was going to do Working For The City but things got all screwed up and I didn’t make it back to Minnesota this year. I heard that all those guys in Salt Lake didn’t really know what they were doing. I don’t remember how it came about but I asked Aldridge one day if he was down to film a full video and it just sort of took off. In the beginning of the season I wanted to get filmed but there wasn’t really a filmer around because Paul (Heran) was busy. I went out with Andrew Brewer, Nial Romanek, Nick Visconti, Sammy Spiteri and Max Tokunaga and they wanted to get clips and I was down to film them because I’d bought my camera after winning last year’s Arbor Faceoff. Basically I was down to do it because I like being around snowboarding and filming things right, even though I was a little bummed I wouldn’t be being filmed as much. It just sort of turned into a project that I really wanted to do my best and work hard on. I enjoy learning about it, its tight.

Contrary to what a lot of kids usually do, you moved from Tahoe to Minnesota for snowboarding. What motivated you to do that and how did you end up liking the move from the mountains to the Twin Cities?

I liked it a lot, I wanna go back next year. It’s cool living where there is 2 cities to do so much. I really like these short resorts with a lot of hits so its awesome to go there. I also really like the feeling of being able to ride downhill and uphill thanks to tow ropes, I don’t know; it’s the best. People say Tahoe is the best because of powder but I’m gonna try to film something at a spot every time it snows so I’m gonna mess it up if I go ride that stuff anyway. I’d rather put my time and practice into trying to get a video part. Minnesota is so awesome; there are so many homies there. Sometimes it can get a little laid back or maybe they don’t stress it as much when it comes to serious stuff which isn’t always bad. I’d like to think I’m productive most of the time. I’m down for Minnesota and the homies. And all the spots!

WFTC2 hit some snags but it sounds like it is really coming out, is that true? Should people have expectations for this movie or will it blow their minds regardless?

Yeah, its comin out! The premiere is on the 13th. I keep saying this and its NOT because I’m in it, I don’t wanna hype up my own part, but it’s the best snowboarding. It puts so many people to shame and I don’t even know what to say about it. When you see it you’re gonna be blown away if you know whats up and understand snowboarding in the streets, you’ll get it. The stuff that goes down in that movie is so mind-boggling. Everything I watched go down while we were filming for it is insane. Those kids are so raw. There are some people that shouldn’t be where they are in snowboarding and these Minnesota kids should definitely take some people’s spots. Companies should make room for kids like Sam Bakken, Jordan Daniels, Colin Wilson, nobody needs to worry about Jesse Paul because he’ll be fine really soon, and all the other guys that nobody has even heard of yet. The ones that no one has heard of are my favorites and they’re about to surprise people.

I don’t know how long you’ve been filming for but you’re really talented with a camera. There are a few other riders like Ted Borland and Brendan Hupp that certainly know what they’re doing behind a lens as well. Why are you guys filming instead of being filmed?

Basically all of my friends pretty much know how to film in terms of composition and zooming, where to stand and angles. But when it comes to exposure and levels of audio and all that technical stuff that you need to check it can be hard, you have to know what you’re doing. Its rough to leave those little things up to your friends when you’re trying to get a trick. When you’re building a spot and trying to do something that’s worthy for your part it can be harder to do while you’re worried about the shot turning out good. This winter we’ve tried with Sammy and Jesse filming some of my tricks and some things turn out good and some things don’t. If the whole movie is filmed in weird ways and footage from a bunch of different types of cameras are in it, it turns out fine and its just one of those types of movies with that feel. But if the filmer who is also a snowboarder puts a lot of thought into shots and how one shot is going to end and one part is going to start then you have something there. You want flow. It might be pretty harsh that I wont accept some people’s footage for the movie but if it doesn’t look right and fit the feel then it just won’t. We’re making a movie for our friend Drake. Drake was just like every one of us, he loved stuff that’s really, really tight and sick. He loved Videograss and Keep the Change, those are people we look up to and that’s sort of what we’re trying to do, I guess. That’s what we wanna make, something really sweet and close to legit.

You’ve definitely got a unique approach, who are some of your filming influences?

Benny Maglinao, the guy that does Alien Workshop stuff. Jason Hernandez, I like his style and love how professional he is. JJ Abrams, the guy that made Super 8. Paul Heran. Jon Stark, one of my best friends and probably the only person I talk to about filming and nerding out on stuff. Skylar Brent, he’s been sick and filming since before Looney Tuesdays. Roobs is a G. And definitely Jackson Casey. I don’t know, it’s hard to make cool stuff but I think the best stuff honestly come from people just messing around. Oh, and Tanner Pendleton but you don’t have to put him in there because everybody loves him.

Can you talk about what its like meeting people at High Cascade and what the lasting effect of that can have on you?

Well, its funny. Dudes like Headwrap and Ryan Paul that worked there thought they were just guys trying to snowboard but to me they were people I was really stoked on. One day they asked if I wanted to ride with them and it sort of started my experience there. When I first showed up I wasn’t really enjoying it so much. Aaron Fraher was bunking next to me and I was scared and thought this kid was gonna beat me up. By the next session I met RP at the Rail Island and hiked it all day just learning a trick. Whenever someone gave me a thumbs up or a head nod that really started meaning a lot to me. By the second session I was way more hyped to be sociable because I was shy going by myself. Then my mom let me stay another session after that and me, Fraher, and Tyler Flanagan were this little group of friends and we would just terrorize Govy. But Scott Stevens, boarding with him there was really awesome. I feel like he really knows what it means to hang out with a kid and hype them up, its really cool. He makes kids so stoked and makes you want to approach people that you look up to or wanna talk to. Also the old Skate Manager, Micah Hollinger. He made me really psyched.

You seem to have spent a bit of time all over the country on your snowboard, what are some of your favorites?

Probably Boreal in Tahoe, I like living there because the weather is awesome. I really like living in Minnesota because that just worked for me. Oregon is really awesome, I was just in Bend staying at the Warbingtons farm and I really like how they live their life and just do things simpler. We also went to Baker this winter and I thought it would be fun living there and coming home to build a fire. I used to hate Salt Lake and its still whatever but I really like it because of all the friends there. I don’t know, there are a lot of places.

Why does snowboarding make you happy?

Friendship. I don’t know, like, you start snowboarding maybe because your friends are doing it or you get someone else to start snowboarding because you get them hyped on it. Friendship. You continue to snowboard with your friends because its fun and fun is friendship. I think snowboarding is so awesome because you’re pushing each other and having a really good time. Some people enjoy going out alone every day; I know I wouldn’t. I think it makes me happy because you go out with your friends and make cool stuff, build cool jumps, film videos that make you laugh or get you really hyped.

Colton and Sammy Spiteri double teaming.

Don’t you think it’s a little bit crazy and awesome that you spend your summers standing on a board riding on a snowy volcano in the middle of a forest in Oregon?

I don’t think it’s crazy because I think its cool. You can stand on this thing and slide on a surface that falls out of the sky. I think that’s cool that you can do that in the summer and in the winter. I think its INSANE that there’s a camp that exists in the summertime because of what comes out of the sky. It’s turning into this huge thing because of something that fell out of the sky, that’s what’s crazy. I like how you can do other things in the summer, too, but we’re really blessed that we can do that in the US in the summer. A lot of people go to other countries and stuff but I think we have a really special summer snowboarding place that’s close to all of us.

Speaking of volcanos, what’s your favorite flavor from Volcano Cones and who would be your ideal ice cream date?

Galaxy. Well, I was at Disney world with my friends Max and Ben and we were at this place called Doughnut Man and I saw the most beautiful girl ever. Max says no and Ben says no but she gave us Tiger Tails and something was up, love was in the air and I haven’t stopped thinking of her. We call her the Doughnut Girl but I don’t know her name or anything.

How long have you been skating? Would you say that you got better at High Cascade?

Well, I definitely started trying to learn how to get better at High Cascade. I’d done it before but I was wishing that I started when I was younger so I wouldn’t be the Squid of the crew. But I’m trying to get better and I’m having fun so that’s all that matters. Last summer right after I met Drake he taught me how to frontside 50-50 the Battle Zone ledges and that was really tight.

How old is your mustache? Does it have a name?

This mustache is from 2 summers ago, so its about to be 3. I don’t shave it or anything; it just stays this length and looks this way.

How much chocolate milk have you drank this season?

Well I had a glass this morning and I just had one with dinner. I also had 2 glasses of chocolate coconut water and I guess it sorta tasted like chocolate milk. You gotta go to Wisconsin for that good stuff. Or a tip for the kids out there, in summer at High Cascade what you have to do is throw in whip cream to your chocolate milk when they have ice cream out. Its like a Govy Starbucks drink.

Who are Taquito and Consuela?

Taquito is one of the loves of my life. He is a one eyed dog that’s a wimp. Consuela is a brave little girl and she’s very strong. They’re both Chihuahuas.

What’s something you’re looking forward to the most this summer?

Hanging out with my friends, snowboarding and meeting kids that are as into snowboarding as I am. Meeting kids that are truly psyched on snowboarding get me really psyched on it.

Sponsors / Shoutouts

I wanna thank Salomon, Bonfire, Arnette, Comune, High Cascade, all of the Under Dawgs, Jon Stark, all of the Working For the City homies, all of my friends, my mom, my sister, and Taquito and Consuela

Jesse Gouveia just makes things look good. He can rip a pow line through the trees, grease a switch backside 270 onto a rail, then drop a better instagram photo than anybody you know. Plus, he’s pretty easy on the eyes. Jesse is one of the most energetic and upbeat people I’ve met in a long time; he’ll have these hilarious bursts of weird noises and dance moves that could turn any frown upside down. People like him are really important to have around because they’ll make light of situations that weren’t serious in the first place and have you in the good mood that you need to be in. He values his friends and family above all and he’ll devour any feature in front of him on the mountain and display some of the most stylish arm style you’ve ever seen. Keep an eye out for this hunk in High Cascade’s park this summer, you’re sure to have a good time when he’s around.

How old are you and where are you from?

I’m 20 years old and I’m from Seattle.

Where did you grow up riding?

Summit at Snoqualmie but sometimes I rode Baker and Crystal

“SAAAAAADDD AIIIRRRR” – Castro Voice.
Why did you move to Salt Lake instead of becoming a Baker local?

I’m not raw enough to be a Baker loc! I’d heard from friends like Chris Cloud that it was fun to live in Salt Lake and it snowed a lot more in the city, plus my friend Connor Brown was planning on moving here for school. Lots of friends already there so it worked out. I’d also rode Brighton before and it was a good place for riding everything and there’s better snow; it’s so light.

Was Snoqualmie a good place to hone in on your park riding or did you have to take trips to other places?

No, Snoqualmie is really sweet for park riding and they had a bunch of sick rails and stuff but for jumps it wasn’t that amazing. Alpental was really amazing for pow and actually boarding around the mountain.

Super top secret SLC spot.
Where did you get your start with CAPiTA and how long have you been involved with them?

One of my first snowboards was a CAPiTA when I was 13, I think. I always rode them through high school because they were based out of Seattle so I was super down. I’d also see Blue (Montgomery, CAPiTA founding owner) around at different events and always had chats with him here and there. It was cool to see in person where the brand was coming from. In my junior year of high school I talked to Blue and he connected me with the Northwest rep which I was so psyched about because I’d always wanted to ride for them but I didn’t know if I ever would. The next year I moved to Utah so I started going through that rep but over the summer I started moving towards going through (Sean) Tedore and Blue more. Couldn’t be more psyched to be involved with those guys and everybody on the team because they’re all people I’ve looked up to in snowboarding for a long time.

You are another one of the Under Dawgs, what’s it like filming with them?

It’s awesome because we’re all just filming with our best friends, not everybody gets to do that. We all kinda know each other well enough that we know when to push each other or know when we can do better. When I’m nervous or scared to try something at a spot one of the other guys will snap me out of it and put me in the right mental state. We all do that for each other, you know, telling a friend to keep trying and not getting over it. We couldn’t ask for anything better than going on trips like this and experiencing all of these new things together. Especially because most of us knew Drake so we all feel the same motivation to make the best movie we can for him.

Drake and Jesse

What is the difference between the Under Dawgs this year and the Nike Chosen event that you were a part of?

Well this is different because we didn’t know we were making a movie and none of us had projects to film for. Everything happened with Drake right around Christmas and Colton Morgan came up with the idea for us to do this for Drake and immediately we were so excited about it. In January Colton brought Sammy Spiteri and Max Tokunaga out to Salt Lake and it turned into this never-ending vacation. Last year we were doing lots of park riding for the contest while we were making ‘This Must Be The Place’. This year was more about us all finding ways to film new things and just have fun making the best movie we could. A big thing is that this year we all live together with Durell Williams, Shane Wright, Ben Strause and myself. Andrew Aldridge and Jordan Morse live close by, not to mention all of the people that have come and stayed with us this winter like Gared and Cory Schneider, Ben Maki, Jon Ray, Johnny Brady and some other dudes. Bedzilla was in full effect! Filming with Colton is fun because he really knows how you do a trick or if you approach a spot differently he’ll work with you and he’s honest about what he sees as a filmer and if he’s not down with the shot or not. It was so sick that Jon Stark came out and stayed for over a month, too. One of the weirdest and most amazing people I’ve ever met, super creative and an amazing person to film with. Both of those guys are little kids with nerd brains and they’re the nicest people ever. I love spending time with them on trips. But yeah, this year was a lot more of things being unexpected. Things were way more spontaneous and we made a lot of last minute decisions to make this happen.

Stacks on Stacks on Stacks. Photo: Ben Birk

You seem to be pretty psyched in Salt Lake but is it still fun to go ride at home?

Yeah, but I didn’t get to do that much this year because I was just hanging out with my family most of the time that I was home. Washington is still one of the most fun places ever to snowboard, especially Baker. We got to go for a week trip out in the Northwest at Mt. Bachelor in Oregon and Mt. Baker in Washington. It was Jordan, Colt, Shane and I and we met up with the Warbingtons (Max and Gus) in Bend and stayed on their farm for a couple days, it was amazing. Then we made our way out to Baker with Desiree Melancon and stayed at my friend Ben Maki’s house and met up with Gray Thompson. We had a really awesome few days building jumps and snow caves until the snow got bad. We also got to meet up with the Go! Boarding dudes, that was really sick. So we had a REALLY big crew that last day out there. After that we sent it to Mt. Hood and built a jump and headed home to Utah that same day. It was definitely a trip with a lot of new experiences, building stuff in the backcountry, but it was super fun.

Jesse looks better on the other side of the camera.
Tell me about your modeling career.

My mom is a makeup artist so they got me doing it when I was a little kid but I got over it really quickly once I was 14. My dad also did it for a really long time so they encouraged us to do it as a way to make money. It’s just a super weird industry that really freaked me out (laughs)

Yep. He was a child model.

Do you subscribe to the social media craze? Based on your coaching of when to drop a ‘gram I’d say you do.

Of course! (laughs) Instagram, vine, snapchat; who doesn’t! Throw it in the double toaster! (@jessegouveia, hit him with a follow!)

What’s your favorite part about working at camp?

There’s a lot of good parts but my favorite is hanging out with a bunch of my friends, snowboarding everyday and getting to meet tons of really awesome kids all summer that are goofy and fun to hang out with. Reminds us of ourselves when we were campers.

Oregon is a playground in the summertime, what is one of your favorite things to do on the in-betweens?

Going on any of the many trips we took to Portland or wherever and getting close to people you didn’t know before like Drake Edwards or Dick Fink and others. We all get to wind down and spend time in Seattle, go skating, see movies or just enjoying the weather outside. Oregon is a really beautiful place to drive around with your friends and find something to do.

Coolest miller flip to date. Photo: Darrell Mathes

How many times did you watch Cosmic Vomit 2 when Jon Ray was staying with you guys?

Definitely over 10 or 12 times, the extras in that movie are the best part about it.

When are you going to get a coconut water sponsor?

When someone gives me the email of Vita Coco or C20’s TM. Cause I’m so down!

Which energy drink sponsor does Under Dawgs have?

Um, we’re still searching (heavy sarcasm). Maybe that’s how we’ll get Vita Coco!

Tell me about your house’s infatuation with Top 40 jamz.

Well Shane Wright is a bro at heart, so he loves that stuff. Ben Strause is the ultimate Top 40 expert, he knows everything about the wheres and what’s about the latest billboard charts. Durell Williams is super down for that Ke$ha. So they pretty much have all turned me into a Top 40 fan, because any time we drive anywhere Shane turns it into a fist pumping, sunroof breaking dance party. “Die Young” by Ke$ha, “Beauty and a Beat” by Nicki and Biebs and any Katy Perry track are our favorites for sure. Some people think they aren’t down for Top 40 at all but after a car ride with Shane they have to choice but to be down for life. He’s made his knuckles bleed over a good fist-pumping track. It might be inspired by a lot of van rides to or from the mountain at camp when we were growing up as campers.

Serious Bro’s. Photo: Ben Strause

The season is wrapping up and so is this interview, what are you going to do until High Cascade rolls around?

Well, hopefully I’m headed to Bear on Thursday with a few friends for the Ashbury Demo then cruising to Hood for the Airblaster Board Games at Timberline. After that I’ll hopefully be headed to Tahoe to meet up with the Airblaster dudes to finish up their movie with a park shoot and maybe building some fun stuff around there. Maybe Super Park, not really sure yet. Then head home in May to hang out with my family in Seattle as much as I can before camp. Hyped for some good slush boarding and see some friends that I haven’t seen in a while.

Sponsors / Shoutouts?

I wanna thank my family and all of my best friends. Shoutout to Airblaster, CAPiTA, Union, Howl, Milosport and High Cascade. I also wanna thank Drake Edwards for keeping us safe and inspired this winter while we’re making his movie. We all miss you and love you, bud!

Tall guy style seems few and far between these days but Andrew Aldridge has it in spades. After finishing his first year as a Counselor he’d also found time to turn just about every head in the park with his moves getting featured in a handful of session recaps. Spending time with this guy on or off hill is sure to be good; he’s always smiling about one thing and getting stoked on another, all the while you’re stoked, too. And when he’s not blowing your mind on the mountain he’s probably pushing on his skateboard, fly-fishing in the Provo River, drawing skeletons and chicks on skateboards or playing bass in the midnight band War Horse. People like Aldridge are the ones that you’re really going to learn something from at High Cascade, be it a life lesson, how to throw a dodgeball or one of the smoothest cab 3’s you’ll ever see. You can just tell Aldridge is appreciative of where he’s from, where he is and where he’s going. Expect a whole lot more from this big guy in the years to come.

-Toby Witte, Fellow HCSC Counselor

Tall guy style at its finest.
What’s your name and what do you do at camp?

My name is Andrew Aldridge and I’m a counselor.

Where do you live during the winter and what do you do there? Do you work or just board?

I currently live in Salt Lake City, UT. I go to school in the fall and sell stuff on eBay in the winter. It’s a good way to save up on money so that I don’t have to work during the season, which is nice.

Why did you choose to become a counselor and what’s the best part?

I chose to become a counselor because I like getting the kids stoked about riding. I also like to get them excited for activities, which is easy because it’s always something fun. Oh yeah, and I get to snowboard all day which makes me pretty stoked. Being stoked is the best part about being a counselor, haha!

Holding it down for New Hampshire. Photo: Greg Furey

What would you tell someone trying to get a job as a counselor at High Cascade?

Its tough to get a job at camp so don’t be discouraged if you are not hired the first time around. I had to apply three years in a row before I got an interview. Just be yourself and show your love for boardin’!

What are some of your favorite things on-hill at High Cascade?

I love to ride the mini pipe, that thing rules. The rails are so nice, too. Pretty much everything is fun to rip around on with a rope tow.

How about off-hill?

When I’m off-hill I love to skate our private parks, play dodgeball, eat Cobra Dogs and Volcano Cones.. The list goes on and on, everything is pretty fun.

Aldridge on his 50th lap of the day. Photo: Greg Furey

You’ve got a pretty unique riding style that catches most people’s attention, which riders would you say influence you the most?

I am a big fan of most people from the east coast. I have always looked up to people like Scott Stevens, Grendys, Pat Moore, Rav and all the dudes from the east coast that do creative things and make cool video parts. I also like to watch Bradshaw and Lucas Magoon do tricks because they just have the best style.

Do you think growing up back East was better or worse for you and snowboarding?

Probably better, to be honest, but there is no way to really tell. The conditions are icy on the east, which makes riding the fresh snow out here all the time really nice!

This pretty much sums it up… Photo: Greg Furey

You’ve been in Salt Lake for a little while now, is it really as good as everyone says it is?

Yeah, its nice to have Brighton 25 minutes from my house and a lot of my homies live here. The skateboarding is also amazing in Utah compared to New Hampshire.

Why is skating in Utah better than New Hampshire in your opinion?

Well there’s a ton more skate parks that are more conveniently located to where I live. The parks themselves are concrete and have really good flow out here but back home there are really rough concrete parks with wooden ramps. Its not that skating back home isn’t fun but there’s just more to do out here.

What is it about Brighton that sets it apart from other resorts?

The big thing is that it’s never really crowded, even on the weekends its pretty empty. It’s up in the Wasatch National Forest so its got amazing views and you’re tucked away in this great little zone of terrain. They have some of the highest quality rails and features in the park that don’t get all sticky from skiers. Basically any day is good up there because no matter what the conditons there is always something fun to do. I love their park; I love riding powder there. Brighton is the best!

This winter you’ve been working with the Under Dawgs in honor of Drake Edwards, could you tell us a little bit about it?

The movie is called D.A.E., which are Drake’s initials. Drake Edwards was a rad dude who loved snowboarding and we had a blast working together this summer. Colton Morgan was in Salt Lake and told me he was making a film dedicated to Drake so obviously I was down. We filmed a lot around Salt Lake and other parts of Utah, the smoggy inversion really helped us for a while. We also went to Colorado a couple of times to hit rails. Some of the other guys just took a trip to the northwest for some pow, too. The movie is going to feature Jesse Gouveia, Shane Wright, Jordan Morse, Colton Morgan, Sammy Spiteri, Max Tokunaga, Ben Strause, Durell Williams, more and myself.

What are some of the best moments you’ve had filming for D.A.E.?

Lots of good times just hanging around Salt Lake and filming. Colton has been in Salt Lake all winter unexpectedly and that has been fun the whole time. He’s a happy person. The trips to Colorado were also really fun and productive with the help of Jon Stark. Good times all around.

Do you feel like Drake is with you when you snowboard?

Yeah, I miss boarding with Drake a ton. He was always ripping the mini pipe with me at camp. We think of him every time we go out.

This should have been a cover.
Tell us about War Horse, it sounds like a metal band.

I had an acoustic guitar that was just sitting around and put it up for trade online and got an offer for a bass guitar with an amp so I went with that. My roommate Logan Griffith always had guitars lying around and he’s really good so we just started messing around and looked up tabs on the internet and started playing for people. We don’t play much but whenever we have people over we’re more than happy to play for them, midnight shows usually. It’s when the War Horse comes out.

So rumor has it you’re an avid angler. How long have you been fly-fishing and what is it that’s drawing so many people to it these days?

I’ve been fly fishing since as long as I can remember because my dad got me and my brother out there since as soon as we could walk. It seems like more and more people are picking it up, that’s forsure. I think it’s just something about being out there in nature and it’s not really too strenuous so you’re just relaxing there in the river and trying to take the gamble of catching the fish. It’s a big waiting game, sometimes you win but it’s always worth it.

Whats the biggest trout you’ve ever caught? Are you a trout slayer?

I’d like to think I’m a trout slayer! The biggest I’ve caught was probably in Utah and I think it was only about 16 inches. It was a good lookin Brown Trout. Still waitin’ for that lunker though!

Will you ever switch to earbud headphones or are you over the top for life?

Over the top headphones fo’ life, get them buds outta here!

Are skeletons better at skating than humans?

Yes, because they’re way easier to draw!

Do you worship friendship?

Absolutely!

Sponsors/Friends

Salomon, Bonfire and Milosport. Shout out to everyone at High Cascade and all the homies in New Hampshire, Utah and everywhere.

The Lodge is considered the center of camp life, this is where every activity meets, has the skate street course as a front yard and has the foam pit, a mini ramp, and tramps in the back yard. Broken into several floors and wings, The Lodge houses the most campers in one building (60 boys between the ages of 13-17) and has the one of the best living areas at camp with a lounge and game room: a pool table, foosball table, ping pong table, video games, a big screen television and more! Come stay in The Lodge this summer at High Cascade Snowboard Camp and you are guaranteed to have the best 8 days of your life, and 100 new best friends.

Check out the videos below to see all the fun activities that happen daily at The Lodge at High Cascade Snowboard Camp.

The Lodge Mini Ramp

AKA the perfect size ramp, this mini ramp is known the town over for being the perfect place to stomp your run and learn as many new tricks as you can imagine. Grind, slide, flip, stall and revert your heart out. Take a few turns before the 4:00 meeting, this ramp is right behind the lodge!

The Lodge Trampolines

HCSC has Spring Free Trampolines. These are the safest, bounciest, quietest, and best trampolines on Earth. Practice flying or learn some snowboarding fundamentals. Strap in to one of our specially designed tramp-boards to try different spins and grabs before taking your new moves up to the glacier. Un-strap and grab a skate deck to do some triple kick flips. Boom.

The Lodge Foam Pit

Have you ever dreamt of catching air, doing a crazy trick and then landing in a hug? Welp, that’s basically what jumping into our foam pit is like. Get corked, do double b’s, or just belly flop… no consequences. We’ve teamed up with K2 Snowboarding to enhance the pit with their Harshmellow binding foam technology making a good thing even better.

Activities Overview

Sure snowboarding is a big part of what we do at camp, but the activities off hill will keep the good times rolling. Skating, sponsor activities for free stuff, Signature Session activities with your favorite pro shreds, and who could forget about dodgeball. So much awesome you will wish there were more hours in the day.

The Street Course is where it all goes down, from daily meetings to skate comps to rap battles. Meet here with your counselor, then buckle your helmet and get after the Euro Gap, nose slide the piano box, jib the cheese wedge, manny the manual pad, or 5-0 a down rail. The possibilities are endless. Rumor has it that Signature Sessioner™ Scott Stevens invented a few new tricks on this street course. Come watch Scott and plenty other people tear The Street Course apart this summer. But beware, there might be an egg or water balloon toss activity going on nearby! Check out the video below to see how much fun you will be having this summer while skating The Street Course at High Cascade Snowboard Camp.
