The NZ Correspondence School

Our Team Coaches provide a diverse riding program designed to improve every aspect of your riding ability; jumps, rails, transition, and core snowboard skills including balance and edge control.  Each rider has individual strengths and weaknesses and with group coaching on all types of terrain you will add new skills, tricks, and abilities to your repertoire while improving on your current talent. Each day is unique as weather can change as do features in the park, so we strive to continuously improve all riding abilities in diffferent terrain as we move around the mountain. Snowboarding is fun especially when you are improving, with this in mind at the beginning end of each week The Team will meet with their coach in the lodge to discuss what their individual goals are. These goals are focused on and then reviewed at the end of the week during video analysis.  For those students interested in entering local competitions riding days are also planned with this in mind.

Dear Parents,

“Thank you for taking the time to visit our website.  If you’ve gotten this far there may be a pretty good chance you are considering sending your child to High Cascade.  Through my years of assisting parents of campers and as a parent myself, I know that choosing to send your child to a new camp for the first time can be a big decision.

We try to cover what we can on our website, but understand that answering all your questions is impossible. So please, if you find that your questions and concerns are not met or you just want to chat, I urge you to call us anytime.  We love talking to parents and endeavour to make the sign-up process as easy as possible.

I hope to have the opportunity to share more about High Cascade Snowboard Camp with you. I absolutely love this place, and I hope your child gets the opportunity to love it as well!

Many Kind Regards,

Sharon White, Co-Owner and Executive Director

High Cascade New Zealand offers return transfers from central Christchurch and Christchurch airport and Queenstown airport. Airfares are not included in camp fees.

The Team Academy -

Shuttle transfers are only offered from Queenstown Airport. Airfares are not included in camp fees.

Arrival day

Christchurch  pick up -

Airport arrivals

Christchurch -

  • The shuttle may go via Christchurch Airport if required to pick up campers.  Please be aware the latest pick up is 9:30am so please ensure your flight arrives at least an hour prior to this time.

Queenstown -

  • Please make arrangements to fly into Queenstown Airport (ZQN) between 8am and 5 p.m.
  • Please book your departure out of ZQN between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
  • Any flights not on arrival day or departure day not within the required times will be charged $75 per camper, per trip.

Airport Meeting place

For those who have never flown unaccompanied before it can be scary arriving in a new destination… but have to fear we have never lost a camper and never will.

All campers are meet by a High Cascade Staff member at their gate and will be wearing High Cascade staff t-shirts. Queenstown airport is very small so if you get lost look for the High Cascade booth at the baggage claim, and/ or ask as airline representative. If a camper cannot locate a HCSC representative they should go to an airport paging telephone and page “A HIGH CASCADE CAMP REPRESENTATIVE” to wherever they are.  They can also call the High Cascade office at 0064 341 1345.

FLIGHT DELAYS OR CANCELLATIONS

Very rarely Queenstown airport may close due to bad weather. Should this happen your airline will arrange an alternate flight. If your flights are delayed or cancelled please call High Cascade immediately, so we have up to date travel information for you or your child.

Christchurch flight changes -

Please to aware once the High Cascade shuttles leaves Christchurch area there is no High Cascade staff at Christchurch Airport. If your flight is delayed or cancelled please contact High Cascade immediately prior to boarding the next flight. While we will do our best to ensure our campers can travel to Queenstown, however arrivals later than 10am are not gauranteed pick-up. We recommend you fly into Queenstown as pick-up is gauranteed and purchase travel insurance to cover any losses included camp fees should this event occur, we can assist you with this.

Unaccompanied Minors (UM)

Unaccompanied Minor is the term used by airlines for passengers who do not meet their minimum age requirement for flying alone.  Each airline has different age minimums and additional fees for passengers flying as Unaccompanied Minors.   Please see the chart below to find out if your child must be ticketed as an Unaccompanied Minor.

As the term Unaccompanied Minor may confuse; a passenger flying under the age of 18 without a parent DOES NOT SIMPLY CONSTITUTE THEM AS AN UNCACCOMPANIED MINOR.

(UM) Age Guidelines

Please know that although each airline has specific age requirements for flying accompanied minors, you can still fly your child, regardless of their age, as an UM (with extra applicable fees).  In addition to the added airline assistance, this also ensures your that child will be met by a High Cascade staff member at his or her gate.

Purchasing tickets

Before purchasing your ticket, please be sure to visit the airline’s respective website for up-to-date Unaccompanied Minor information.  You may find that if your child requires an UM ticket, you may not be able to purchase your ticket via the internet.  Since each airline has different policies on booking UMs flights with layovers, last legs of the day, etc, booking your child’s ticket on the internet may not be the best route.

UM Fees

To ensure that your child’s check-in and ticketing goes smoothly on their departure it is very important that the UM Fee for the return leg is pre-paid.  Airlines do not accept credit card payments over the phone from parents at the time of the departing check-in process.  In some cases, airlines do not make this obvious at the time of ticket purchase; which results in some parents overlooking paying their return UM Fee.

For airline information on UM please click on the links below:

Or contact your airline provider.

When booking your flight, most airlines will require the name and contact information of the person picking up your child.  Please give them the following information:

• Sharon White

• High Cascade

• 0064 2060261578

• 6a Williams St

• Queenstown

SHUTTLES

Christchurch -

There is one departure time for shuttles from Christchurch at 8:30am. Pick ups can be arranged if campers are en route to Ashburton and inland through to Lake Tekapo.

The trip can take up to 8 hours with stops.

Please bring lunch as this is not provided in the camp fee.

Queenstown –

On arrival day several shuttles run periodically from the airport between 8am and 6pm.

On departure day campers are assigned to shuttles according to their departing flight time.

To ensure campers have plenty of time to check-in for their flight, campers will depart from HCSC HQ to allow for approximately 2-4 hours before their flight is scheduled to depart, depending on national or international flights.

DEPARTURE DAY

Christchurch Shuttles -

Departure to Christchurch is at 9am. Drop offs en route will be arrange prior to camp start date and stop locations and times will be emailed to campers, with the shuttles drivers camp cell phone number.

Airport Departures -

Upon arriving at the airport campers will be assisted with luggage and airline check-in procedures. Unaccompanied Minors are escorted by a High Cascade staff member to their gate.  Campers NOT flying as Unaccompanied Minors may not be accompanied to their gate if a long delay is required, and may essentially be without supervision after they receive their boarding pass. Therefore these campers are required to go to the departure lounge to await their flight.

Christchurch flights must depart after 7pm to allow for 2 hours check-in for international flights.

TRAVELING BY CAR

If you are arriving to camp by car, please arrange to arrive on the first day of your session between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m.  Please plan to depart on the last day of your session between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.  There is no supervision or lodging available before 12 p.m. on arrival day or after 12 p.m. on departure day; so please plan your travel accordingly.

TRAVELLING BY BUS

Please let us know which bus company you/ your child are arriving with and where the arrival/ drop off points are. Please check with the bus company you use to find information for an Unaccompanied Minor.

COMMUNICATION ON ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE DAYS

There is a staff member in the office all day keeping track of campers’ arrivals/ departures and all camp staff involved in pick-ups will have camp cell phones.

En route to and from Christchurch there are large sections of the road that do not have cell phone coverage. Please be aware that weather may cause delays in both flights and road travel.

Due to the nature of arrival day your child may not be in contact with you until the evening of arrival day. Cell phones are permitted at camp so campers can choose to notify a parent/ guardian of their arrival/ departure themselves or using the camp phone/ internet.

Camper Credits for Injuries.

In the rare event that a camper is injured while at camp and does not get clearance from a physician to snowboard, there are two options:

1. Stay at camp and partake in an ‘off-hill’ activity while everyone else snowboards. In the afternoon and evening there are plenty of non-physical activities to keep an injured camper entertained. If you choose this option, no credits or refunds will be given.

2. Leave camp a.s.a.p, and receive a pro-rated camp credit for days missed for Adult or Session camps only.  You’ll be missed but Camp Credits are good for 1 year, however are non-transferrable. There are no refunds on Team camp programs once commenced and campers are highly recommended to purchase travel insurance which covers such loss.

Please keep in mind there are NO exceptions to the above cancellation policies (even in the extreme cases of emergency, injury or sickness). High Cascade strongly recommends that you purchase travel insurance to protect yourself from any such loss and medical costs while in New Zealand.

Q: What age campers do you accept?

A:  We welcome males and females ages 9 and up.

A:  Adult camps are for ages 18 and up.

Q: Should I bring my own Snowboard equipment, BMX, skateboard, etcetera?

A:  Snowboard camp – Bring your own snowboard equipment and helmet if you have them—especially if you are comfortable with your setup. HCSC has a Demo snowboard center with the 2014 snowboards to demo, if you would prefer to try something new. Campers are encouraged to demo equipment during their stay. Campers also have the option of hiring snowboard equipment when they arrive in Queentstown and Alta Queenstown offers a special discounted rate for our campers. Also, bring your skateboard but due to transport restrictions BMX’s are not recommended at the snowboard camp.

Skateboard/ Mountain Bike/ BMX camp – Your skateboard, mountain bike, and BMX are welcome, but not your snowboard isn’t because its summertime! Helmets are required at this camp so if you have one bring it. High Cascade also provides some helmets for campers that don’t have their own, but the number is limited, please call High Cascade (0508 High Cascade) if you require one and we’ll allocate one to you for your camp.

Q: What skill level do you need to attend HCSC?

A:  All skill levels are welcome—from complete beginners to experts.

Q: How does it work with so many ability levels at one camp?

A:  Campers are placed into small coaching groups with 6-8 campers per coach.  These coaching groups are based on ability levels, so that you feel comfortable progressing with riders of similar ability.

Q: What makes High Cascade better than the other camps?

A: “THE PLACES AND THE PEOPLE!”

Best Facilities – Cardrona has the best park facilities in New Zealand for progression. It provides everything from beginner to expert features. This coupled with the soft spring snow conditions create the ideal environment for progression, safety and fun. The park is groomed nightly and maintained throughout the day providing the very best in freestyle snowboard facilities. Also High Cascade is about fun and we ensure very minute of you stay here is F-U-N filled. Our campers get the opportunity to explore and enjoy the sites and activities in Queentown – which truly is the adventure capital of the world.

Best Employees – When it comes to staff, we have the cream of the crop. Our employees are better trained, better respected and better rewarded than any camp staff. Our coaches are hand picked for their ability, industry experience and personal attributes. Our counsellor staff are picked for their experience working with youths and their interest in rider sports. Their skill base varies from university students to school teacher’s and all are CPR trained and certified. Our management staff have over 50 years combined experience within the board sports industry, and are highly skilled at operating camps and events. In short, we pride ourselves in having the best staff to run the best camp.

Q: What’s the weather and snow like in New Zealand in Spring?

A:  Snowboard Camp  – The weather in spring in New Zealand is very nice but can unpredictable. Wind is usually the contributing factor to closed days at Ski Areas, however Cardrona boasted only four closed days throughout the 2014 season. Reduced snow levels can have an impact on the facilities that are open during the last few weeks of the season. However jumps and jibs do not require a large amount of snow and due to the permanent earthworks, Cardrona is able to operate well in varied snow depths.

Despite the warmth of spring, during the day it will be cold in the morning and at night so please bring warm clothing with this in mind.

Q: How are campers supervised?

A:  Overall, our staff to camper ratio is 1:4 respectively, that’s one experienced staff member to every four campers at High Cascade. Our camp operates along side OSCAR supervision guidelines. There are maximum of ten campers are assigned to a staff member during daytime activities and a maximum of eight are assigned to a staff member during the evening.

Q: Can I call my child while they are at camp?

A:  As soon as campers settle into their living quarters upon arrival, they are to call home to let parents know they have arrived safely. Please understand that campers have very busy fun-filled sessions, so please do not be too stressed if your son or daughter does not call home as often as you’d like. All major cell phone providers receive service on Snowpark, and are permitted at camp. For our parents convenience High Cascade also provides a 24hour emergency hotline which puts you indirect contact with High Cascade management staff and campers.

Q: What should my camper bring to camp?

A:  Once you register for camp, you will receive a camp guide with a list of what to bring to camp.

Q: What happens if a camper gets hurt?

A:  We have staff trained certified and trained in first aid and CPR at every camp we operate. During hours of Cardrona operation, injured campers will be escorted by a staff member to the ski-patrol staff for assessment. Should the camper require it, High Cascade provides a staff member and transport to escort the camper to the appropriate medical center or hospital facility.

Q: What level of English so I need for The Team Academy?

A:  Some basic understanding of the English Language is preferred to assist with your coaching but if staying for the 2 week program you will be amazed at how well you speak English when you leave. An example is: One Japanese student could only say “hello, thank you and sorry” when he arrived and left 3 months later able to communicate English well.
