Take a Tour of the HCSC Map.

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Cartography (from Greek chartis = map and graphein = write) is the study and practice of making maps. Combining science, aesthetics, and technique, cartography builds on the premise that reality can be modeled in ways that communicate spatial information effectively.

The earliest known maps are of the heavens, not the earth. Dots dating to 16,500 BCE found on the walls of the Lascaux caves map out part of the night sky, including the three bright stars Vega, Deneb, and Altair (the Summer Triangle asterism), as well as the Pleiades star cluster.

Many feel that the HCSC map is a map of the heavens as well.

Sink Your Teeth into these Sticks

Friday, January 21st, 2011

These red hot new HCSC stickers are fresh from the factory over at diecutstickers.com.

Each come in two sizes: huge and medium. There will be a few of the medium stickers floating around for sure… but them huge ones are gonna be a hot commodity.

We don’t even actually have these things yet… but the boys in brown UPS trucks certainly do. So unless a truck gets robbed over the weekend, we’re in for an office treat on Monday when we get our hands on them.

It’s a boy! George Decker English. Son of Kevin English. Heir to the Partial Throne of HCSC.

Monday, January 10th, 2011

HCSC Co-Owner Kevin English and his wife Kim have a new son: George Decker English.

Born: January 7, 2011 @ 2:37am
9 pounds 2 oz., 20.5 inches long

That brings the English family up to 6! Kevin & Kim, Milani (daughter, 3 years), George (son, 3 days), Rudy (black lab, 4 years) & Rascal (cockerpoo, 91 years).

Way to go buddy.  We just signed George up for Session #1, 2019: The Amelie Voutilainen* Signature Session™.

You should be receiving your Finishing Forms via email in 9 years.  Please note this in your calendar.

*Currently age 6, daughter of another HCSC co-owner & Art Director, Ami Voutilainen

Air Bags & Foam Pits: Better than Broken Glass and Snake Pits

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Last summer we added an on-hill Air Bag courtesy of The DC Mtn. Lab and an insane off-hill foam pit (foam blocks enhanced by K2 Snowboarding’s “Harshmellow” technology).  Come join us this summer and do some soft jumping.

Here are 3 things that Foam Pits and Air Bags are way better than to jump into:

1.) A Snake Pit.

Not that rad.  Think about it.  Sure, it might be marginally soft and would remind you of Cobra Dogs, but you’re jumping into a pile of fangs.  Even if the snakes weren’t poisonous, the disgusting factor alone is enough to make you wind up in a mental hospital.

2.) A Pile of Broken Recycling Glass

Jumping into the Green Movement is great, but this would be taking things a bit too far.  If the massive lacerations and embedded glass shards are enough to wreck your day – then think about how bad it would sting if even just one of those broken bottles once held lemon juice.  Ahhhhhh!

3.) A Bunch of Puppies

We’d all love to be in a pile of cute little puppies (right?).  Their big round eyes melting your heart and their playful nips keeping you giggling.  The problem here is your entrance.  You need to ease into a pile of puppies, you DO NOT JUMP.  We repeat YOU DO NOT JUMP.   If you hurt even one of those little guys and had to explain what happened to the vet… well, good luck having that one on your conscience.

Check out a quick look at the Foam Pit:

TransAM to Kick Off Saturday: Waterville Valley, New Hampshire

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

HCSC is proud to enter it’s 8th (we think – it’s been so long, we’re uncertain) season as a supporter of the Transworld Snowboarding TransAM.  This low pressure, high fun Mini Park jam format event is sure to please even the most discerning snowboard competitor.

Register online here to partake in the goodtimes.

We’re kicking things off in the Great State of New Hampshire, at Waterville Valley, which holds a special place in the heart of HCSC. Why?  Welp:

DYK? The Head Snowboard Guy at Waterville (parks, marketing, etc.) Luke Mathison was a long time coach for HCSC.

Photo on loan from TWS... (thanks guys)

DYK? Waterville’s Marketing Director Deb Moore is Pat Moore’s mom? (former camper turned Signature Sessioner Pat Moore)

Photo on loan from Snowborder Magazine (thanks guys)

DYK? Deb has never been to HCSC, but each season we invite her out to bake cookies at Pat’s session.

Get it? Ginger-bread cookies? Yea... sorry, not that funny.

DYK? This is awesome:

Is the High Cascade Snowboard Camp Logo Really the State of New Hampshire?

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

For many years, conspiracy theorists, and symbolism experts have accused the snowboard world of being run by East Coasters, and littered with East Coast symbolism. An in-depth look at the organizational charts of every major snowboard publication, manufacturer, mountain, and marketing firm uncovers countless New Englanders in high profile roles. From the So Cal to Soho, our industry is riddled with people and imagery of East Coast decent.

Recently, religious iconology and symbology professor Robert Langdon, of Harvard University has announced his discovery that the logo for High Cascade Snowboard Camp in Oregon, is shockingly close to the shape of the State of New Hampshire when turned on end. A little too close for coincidence, in his opinion.

This discovery comes at a significant time in the snowboard season, as the Transworld Snowboarding TransAM, presented by High Cascade kicks off it’s 2011 season at Waterville Valley, in New Hampshire. Professor Robert Langdon, an Exeter, New Hampshire native, has been widely criticized in the past for manipulating his study of historic symbols for the media benefit of his home state. Perhaps this speculative discovery is a cheap ploy by the professor to gain media attention for the Live Free or Die State. Or, perhaps it is yet another insight into the East Coast’s eerie influence over the world of snowboarding. HCSC has declined to comment on this matter.
