Welcome to 2008 Summer Snowboard Camp at High Cascade!  Please read over the following pages in order to familiarize yourself with High Cascade’s day-to-day summer operations.  We aim to exceed all expectations you may have of what a summer camp experience should be!  If you ever have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call or e-mail us before, during, or after your camp experience.

IN THE CASE OF AN EMERGENCY OUTSIDE OF OFFICE HOURS please call (800)334-4272 and choose the voice mail for the Camp Director, Preston Strout, to hear the emergency instructions.  Out of courtesy to our busy staff, please limit phone calls outside of office hours to EMERGENCY SITUATIONS ONLY.

ARRIVAL DAY

*Upon arrival all young campers are reminded to call home to report they have arrived at camp safely.

Arrivals/Departures by Car

If you are arriving to camp by car, please arrange to arrive on the first day of your session between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m.  Please plan to depart on the last day of your session between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.  There is no supervision or lodging available before 12 p.m. on arrival day or after 12 p.m. on departure day; so please plan your travel accordingly. Arrivals/Departures by Plane

If you are flying to camp, please fly into The Portland International Airport (PDX) flypdx.com on the first day of your session between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.  Please book your departure out of PDX between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on the last day of your session.  Any flights on arrival day or departure day outside of our 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. window will be charged $75 per camper, per trip.

Campers Flying As Unaccompanied Minors (UM)

Each airline has different age requirements and additional fees for flying unaccompanied minors.   Campers flying under the status of an UM will be met at their gate by a High Cascade staff member upon their arrival at PDX.  If you are scheduling your child's flight as an UM, it is MANDATORY that you note this in your travel itinerary form.

Campers NOT Flying As Unaccompanied Minors (UM)

Campers not flying as UM will NOT be met at their gate by a High Cascade staff member. All campers not flying as UMs will be met outside the security gate by a High Cascade staff member and will be assisted their baggage and checked in for their High Cascade shuttle at baggage claim #2.
If a camper cannot locate a HCSC representative they should go to an airport paging telephone and page "A HIGH CASCADE CAMP REPRESENTATIVE" to wherever the camper is standing.  They can also call the High Cascade office at 800.334.4272. 

(UM) Age Restrictions


Please know that although each airline has specific age requirements for flying accompanied minors, you can still fly you child, regardless of their age, as an UM (with the respective airlines’ applicable fees).  In addition to the added airline assistance, this also ensures your that child will be met by a High Cascade staff member at his or her gate.  If you are scheduling your child's flight as an UM, it is MANDATORY that you note this in your travel itinerary form. CHANGES IN DEPARTURE/ARRIVAL TIMES

Please call (800)334-4272 in the case of any change in camper arrival or departure information (only flight time changes of more than 15 minutes need to be noted).  If you reach our voice message system, please leave a detailed message in Meagan Stein, Camp Relations Manager’s, voice mail.  You may also email highcascade@highcascade.com with any changes in departures or arrivals.Due to busy arrival days and multiple arrival time changes, you will only be contacted by HCSC if we are unable to locate your child at the airport. 

DEPARTURE DAY

AIRPORT:
HCSC staff members are at the Portland International Airport (PDX) from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on departure days.  Campers will be shuttled to the airport by one of our trained HCSC staff approximately three hours prior to their departure time. Upon departing the shuttle, campers will be met by HCSC representatives to assist with luggage and airline check-in procedures. Unaccompanied minors will be escorted to their gate by a High Cascade staff member.  Please note: once checked in at the desk, campers NOT flying as unaccompanied minors will not be accompanied to their gate.

BY CAR:
Campers should be picked up at the Cascade Lodge no later than 12:00PM on departure day.  Whomever is designated to pick up campers under 18 years-old must present their photo I.D.

HEALTH INSURANCE

Though it is not required, High Cascade very strongly recommends all campers, regardless of age, have health insurance prior to visiting HCSC.  Though our staff is well trained to mitigate injuries, many activities at Camp are hazardous and include certain risks and dangers and include the risk of serious injury or death. 

MEDICATION AT CAMP/CAMP NURSE

To ensure the safest possible environment at our summer camp, HCSC employs a full time registered nurse. Prescription or over the counter medication must be brought to camp in original containers.  Please use the appropriate space on the Medical Consent Form in your confirmation packet to record instructions regarding all medications to be administered at camp, including over-the-counter medicines and herbal supplements.  Medications under the supervision of the camp nurse will be administered according to parent/prescription instructions.

EMERGENCIES OR INJURIES

In addition to employing a Nurse 24-hours-a-day during sessions, HCSC employs 24-hour on-call drivers who are equipped with cellular phones.  In the event a camper requires medical attention outside of High Cascade’s care, he/she will be taken to one of the following hospitals or clinics by a skilled High Cascade driver and parents will be notified as soon as possible.

HIGH CASCADE STAFF

The year 2008 marks our 19th year of providing the finest snowboard camp experience available with a dedicated staff to provide a safe and fun camp environment.

  • Employees are selected based on their relevant work experience, qualifications, maturity level, reliability, enthusiasm and overall ability to provide a positive and supportive environment for our campers.

  • HCSC staff arrives approximately two weeks before camp to complete our rigorous training program.

  • All staff are certified in American Red Cross First Aid and CPR

  • All employees pass pre-employment drug screening and agree to random testing throughout the season.

  • Background and Motor Vehicle Record checks are performed on all staff.

  • All water activities are supervised by staff members who are certified Lifeguards while all snowboard coaches are AASI trained.

  • We are very proud of the fact that 80% of our staff returns each year.
  • SNOW CONDITIONS & HCSC FACILITIES

    Summer snowboarding on Mt. Hood is possible due to Timberline Ski Area and its Palmer Snowfield, which offers year-round snow. Although powder snow has been known to arrive in June, on average, summer snow conditions at Mt. Hood compare to late spring conditions at most major resorts in the Northwest. 

    Pat Malendowski of Planet Snow Design, builder of the 2002 SLC Olympic Superpipe, has helped HCSC earn the reputation of providing the finest summer snowboard facilities and programs.  High Cascade’s private snow facility is only open to campers, HCSC staff, and visiting pro snowboarders.  Offering the only lift operated summer snowboarding in the U.S., Timberline Ski Area has been host to Olympic, professional, and recreational skiers and snowboarders for decades.

    CLOTHING & WHAT TO WEAR AT CAMP

    The weather in the Cascades is nearly impossible to predict.  Campers must plan for variable weather conditions.  Early sessions (June) tend to have cooler conditions at base camp and on hill with temperatures ranging from 30 – 60 degrees on hill and from 45 – 70 degrees at base camp. Later sessions (July & August) are typically warmer with temperatures ranging from 40 – 70 degrees on hill and from 60 – 90 degrees at base camp.     Typical on hill clothing includes lightweight waterproof pants, jacket, gloves and lightweight layers of breathable underclothing.  Campers may choose to add or subtract layers of clothing as weather conditions change on hill.  Click here for current weather conditions at Timberline Hats, gloves, goggles, sunglasses, and sunscreen are also necessary.  Shorts and t-shirts are usually adequate for base camp activities, but warm clothes such as pants, jeans and long sleeve shirts, sweatshirts, and jackets may be required for cooler evening temperatures.

    RECEIVING MAIL AT CAMP

    Counselors deliver camper mail in the late afternoon or evening, Monday through Friday.  ***Due to VERY SLOW mail service in Government Camp, please be sure to send mail and packages no later than the second day of your camper’s session to ensure that the mail is received while your child is at camp.  Please include the name of your camper's house (if you know it)

    PHONE CALLS

    Cell phones are permitted at camp and all major cellular companies provide reception in Government Camp.  Campers may also make long distance outgoing calls “collect” or with calling cards.  Upon arrival at camp, all campers are reminded to call home to check in with parents and provide their house phone number.  Due to campers’ busy schedules, please do not be alarmed if your child does not call as often as you would like.  

    LAUNDRY

    Campers are encouraged to bring enough clothing to last for their session. Campers staying for more than one session will have the opportunity to use coin operated laundry machines in-between sessions.

    HELMETS

    Helmets are mandatory snowboard equipment for all campers under the age of 18.  If you do not already have your own, HCSC will lend you a helmet to use during your camp session.  Coaches check camper’s helmet and snowboard equipment set-up every morning before campers are allowed to load the chairlift.  Campers are strongly encouraged to purchase a snowboard specific helmet prior to camp and bring it with them. ALL CAMPERS AND STAFF are strictly required to wear helmets while skateboarding, rollerblading and biking on all HCSC facilities.

    HCSC DEMO SHOP

    Our fleet of 2008-09 demo equipment consists of over 500 boards, boots & bindings provided by our generous sponsors.  All HCSC campers are eligible and encouraged to try our sponsors' new product lines.  This service is provided free of charge, and is a great way to test out new gear before it even hits the stores!  If your gear no longer fits, is broken, or you feel it is outdated, please feel free to leave your gear at home and use the demo equipment during your session!

    SPENDING MONEY

    Campers may set up spending accounts at The Camp Store™ and Exit Real World with credit cards prior to their arrival.  The accounts ensure campers need not carry large amounts of cash.  The Camp Store™ does not carry drinks or snacks. So bringing some cash is suggested ($100 for snacks/drinks should be sufficient for a session). Campers may also make purchases at camp with personal debit/credit cards.

    In the event a camper needs additional cash while at camp, High Cascade can process a credit card cash advance.  To receive a cash advance, the camper’s parent or guardian must call the office and authorize that their credit/debit card be charged.   The fee for this service is 5% of the amount charged to the card.  In order to ensure same day cash, credit card advance requests must be called in before 4:00 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.

    THE CAMP STORE™

    All of the latest and greatest High Cascade ByProducts™ are available at The Camp Store™.  We have sweatshirts, t-shirts, exclusive High Cascade Dakine backpacks, beanies, hats, stickers and other exclusive HCSC gear.  For convenience you can set your child up with a pre-authorized credit card charge account with a set limit prior to coming to camp. Setting up an account at The Camp Store™ decreases the need to bring large amounts of cash to camp.  Don’t forget, you can also arrive at camp sporting High Cascade Byproducts™ by shopping at the online Camp Store™.

    EXIT REAL WORLD SKATE & SNOWBOARD SHOP

    Located right in the heart of Government Camp, EXIT Real World offers a variety of your favorite brands of clothing, sunglasses, goggles, shoes, videos, skateboards & equipment, snowboards & equipment and industry related merchandise.  You can set up a credit card charge account prior to coming to camp.

    THE STAFF SALE™

    Once a session High Cascade's staff members and visiting pros sell their new and used gear at the legendary Staff Sale™. Like a snowboard flea market - deals of the century can be found on everything from hard to find Airblaster stuff to next year's boards, boots and bindings.  Unfortunately spending accounts cannot be set up for this sale, so cash is need for any purchases at The Staff Sale™.

    LOST & FOUND

    All campers are provided with small storage lockers for valuables; however, a busy camp environment is the ideal place to lose track of or misplace personal belongings. With this in mind, we recommend that valuables NOT be brought to camp.

    To avoid loss of personal belongings, please clearly mark all clothing and items with camper identification prior to coming to camp. Please remember to bring a padlock to lock up valuables.

    High Cascade is not responsible for personal items that are lost, left behind, or stolen. All lost item claims must be submitted with a description of item(s) lost to highcascade@highcascade.com. All remaining items will be donated to charity two weeks after the end of each session.
